The 46th World Amateur Go Championship (WAGC), the most prestigious international amateur Go tournament recognised by the International Go Federation (IGF), will be held in Mungyeong, Republic of Korea, from September 6 to 13, 2026.
The WAGC brings together the strongest amateur Go players from around the world, each representing their respective countries and territories. Approximately 100 overseas players, officials, and guests from 77 countries and territories are expected to participate in this year’s event.
The tournament is organized by the Korea Baduk Association (KBA), the International Go Federation (IGF), and the Korea Baduk Federation, with support from Mungyeong City, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and the Korea Sports Promotion Foundation. The Mungyeong-Si Baduk Association serves as a cooperating organisation.
Competition will be conducted as an individual tournament under an eight-round Swiss system with a komi of 6.5 points. During the event period, participants will attend the IGF General Meeting and Board Meeting, take part in the opening ceremony and friendship events, and compete through eight rounds of tournament play. The closing ceremony and anti-doping test will be held on the final day of the championship.
In addition to the competition, participants will have opportunities to experience Korean culture and the natural beauty of Mungyeong through organized tour programs.
The championship returns to Korea for the first time since the 35th World Amateur Go Championship held in Gyeongju in 2014. As an international sporting event that will bring together the global Go community in Mungyeong, the tournament is expected to further promote international exchange, strengthen the global profile of Go, and contribute to the local economy and city branding.
