Overview of European Go in 2024
The European Go scene as ever featured bright events in 2024. Let’s recall the most important of them.
Hamburg hosted two important competitions on 20–23 March: the Professional Championship (winner: Mateusz Surma 3p) and the Youth Championship. The latter brought together almost 100 participants and the winners were Benoit Robichon 3d (U21 age category), Yuze Xing 5d (U18), and Bartik Dach 2d (U12).
Milena Bocle 3d and Florent Labouret 5d from France won the Pair Go Championship on 19–21 April in Dubrovnik, Croatia. The total number of participating pairs was 20.
European professional team (Mateusz Surma 3p, Andrii Kravets 1p, Stanislaw Frejlak 1p, and Tanguy Le Calve 1p) participated in the Chinese C League on 31 May–7 June after three years of break. This time, the team lost six rounds and skipped one due to an odd number of participating teams.
The 66th European Go Congress (EGC) was held on 26 July–10 August in Toulouse, France, and brought together over a thousand players. Among the numerous tournaments and events, there were such important European competitions as the individual European Championship (winner: Andrii Kravets 2p, for the second year straight) and the final of the Pandanet European Team Championship (winner: the team of France).
The 39th World Youth Championship was held on 25–29 August in Vatra Dornei, Romania. The winners were Kim Tae Heon 6d from South Korea (U18) and Zhang Yimiao 6d from China (U12).
Sinan Dzhepov 5d won the Student Championship on 7-8 September in Novi Sad, Serbia. Traditionally the smallest of the European Championships, this competition brought together ten participants from Serbia, Bulgaria, and Czechia.
Li Ting 1p won the Women’s Championship on 14–15 September in Bratislava, repeating her last year’s success. This event brought together 24 participants.
Altogether, 2024 was a successful year for European Go. Let’s look forward to new exciting events in 2025!
