Therapeutic Use Exemptions (TUEs)

Therapeutic Use Exemptions (TUEs)

What to do when medical treatment requires a prohibited substance

Some athletes may need to use a substance or method that is on the WADA Prohibited List due to a legitimate medical condition. In these cases, a Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE) allows the athlete to use the necessary treatment without violating anti-doping rules.

What is a TUE?

A TUE is a formal approval for an athlete to use a prohibited substance or method for medical reasons. TUEs are granted only when:

  • The athlete has a clear medical diagnosis
  • No reasonable alternative treatment exists
  • The treatment will not enhance performance beyond normal recovery
  • The use is not a consequence of prior prohibited use

Who needs a TUE?

Athletes subject to IGF testing or competing at the international level must obtain a TUE in advance if they require a prohibited substance or method for medical reasons.

How to apply

Athletes must submit a complete TUE application including:

  1. A medical diagnosis and detailed clinical history
  2. Supporting documentation from a licensed physician
  3. Any required test results or specialist reports

Applications should be submitted as early as possible and will be reviewed by the IGF’s independent TUE Committee.

Already have a TUE?

If you have a TUE issued by your National Anti-Doping Organisation, it may be recognised by the IGF. Athletes must submit a copy of the TUE to the IGF for review and approval prior to competition.

If you have questions about whether you need a TUE or how to apply, contact the IGF Anti-Doping Administrator.
